12 Things You Can Do to Aid Orphans

Experience the joy found in loving a child who may have no one else in the world.  Here are twelve ways, large and small, you can act:

  1. Sponsor a child through an orphan-serving organization that enables individuals, families and groups to aid orphans with modest monthly contributions.

  2. Get involved in the life of a foster youth as a mentor or as a volunteer through a local church or nonprofit. (See great models here)

  3. Focus your next vacation on service to orphans with an orphan-serving organization nearby or overseas.

  4. Support foster and adoptive parents in practical way like running errands, housecleaning or babysitting.

  5. Plan a local “Orphan Sunday” event for November 8, 2009—anything from a fundraiser concert or student gathering to a sermon or volunteer recruitment drive.

  6. Weigh becoming a foster parent by contacting your county to learn what’s involved.

  7. Consider adoption--many excellent adoption agencies stand ready to help you weigh this life-changing decision.

  8. Provide financial aid to help families adopt, through organizations like Abba Fund, Caroline’s Promise, Lifesong for Orphans and Show Hope

  9. Find an orphan-serving organization you can support or volunteer with through this Matching Tool.

  10. Make a commitment to pray for orphans and invite others to join you.

  11. Start an Orphan Investment Group with friends, contributing to a shared account and using it to fund effective orphan serving organizations.

  12. Launch an Orphan Ministry in Your Church, drawing from the great examples here.
